The Young People’s Concerts are one of the most important contributions that Queens Symphony Orchestra makes to the community by bringing music education to the area’s youth. These concerts provide students of New York the opportunity to experience a live, professional symphonic concert in an outside performance hall with the emphasis placed on orchestral music in an educational and interactive format. These concerts serve up to 8,000 children per year, and are booked directly with public and private schools on a first-come, first-served basis. There are two themes offered each school year, one in the fall and the other in the spring. These events are appropriate for grades Kindergarten through 8, and are held at Kupferberg Center, Queens College. Study Guides are also sent ahead of time to all classes that attend the concerts, providing a more in-depth preparation for the performance. Attending schools may also download the study guide from our website, along with listening tools, games and suggestions for classroom activities.
MAY 20, 2010 – Let's Make an Orchestra!
The game-show format QSO introduced last spring was such a hit that we decided to create new games using different orchestral works to teach your students about the orchestra. In addition, one of QSO's Young Soloist Competition winners, Alicia Choi, will perform on violin to demonstrate various playing techniques and styles. Seeing her perform may even inspire your students to start studying an instrument themselves! This 45-minute event will be offered at 10:00 am and again at 11:30 am.

QSO asks for co-sponsorship from your school in the amount of $180 per class, which comes out to approximately $6 per student. This co-sponsorship payment helps defray the costs of study guides and concert expenses. This is an incredible bargain and an opportunity to give your students top-notch exposure to the classical world by hearing and learning from professional, union musicians that play with major orchestras including the New York City Ballet, American Symphony Orchestra, New York Pops and the top Broadway musicals.
Please download the YPC Reservation Form above, which is due May 4, fill it out completely, and either fax, mail or email it to the QSO Office in order to reserve your seats. If you have any questions regarding the registration process or the event itself, please contact our Education Coordinator, Kate Oberjat, by phone (718-326-4455, ext. 19) or email (education@queenssymphony.org). We look forward to seeing your classes at an upcoming event!
